Recap of January Club Meeting

Seven members and two guests (Miriam Moorman and Lee Buckland) attended our January 9 ANMP club meeting held at the Table of Grace 365 Headquarters in Round Rock. Lee Buckland is the Round Rock Sunrise Rotary Club Secretary and also is a board member for the Play for All Abilities Park on A. W. Grimes Blvd. in Round Rock. Lee also chairs the Service Coalition of Round Rock Operations that provides a forum for collaboration and support among multiple service and community organizations.

Lee’s presentation to our club focused on the Play for All Abilities Park. The mission of the park is to provide a safe, fun place to play and develop new skills for children of all abilities.  The 51,000 square feet park is intended for play as well as for therapy and learning. See website for several pictures illustrating the playground configuration. There is an expansion effort underway and a need to replace well-used equipment. Our club and our personal contributions are most welcome.

Libraries of Love - Sponsors Needed!

The following is a message from Trudy Marshall, founder of Libraries of Love. Trudy is a member of the Rotary Club of Pflugerville. If you are able to help sponsor, please reach out through the Libraries of Love website or contact Sarah Gunderson, who can introduce you to Trudy via email. If you'd rather not sponsor, you can still give a one-time donation online. https://librariesoflove.org/

Libraries of Love was started in 2005. It now has 39 school libraries in Uganda, 6 in Kenya and 3 prison libraries. It provides each school with books equal to three times its number of students. It also provides book shelving, painting and new ceilings if needed, plus sheer curtains to keep the dirt out, but let light in. Librarian training is constant.

The kids are out of school now until the first week of February. Exceptions are those in 7th and 11th grades, which are key grades that have to take the dreaded exams to see where they will go next year - a good school or?  Also, some of our college students that are doing internships or taking exit exams are still in school.

School fees here have skyrocketed. It's crazy. The government gives the schools 2,000 schillings per child - which is about seventy-five cents. That should pay teacher salaries and help feed kids.

I am probably going to need extra sponsors since fees are so high - so if you know anyone, please let me know.

Examples of things required for a primary boarding student:  School fees, books, registration, development, ream of paper, special program, dictionary, pocket money, atlas, toilet paper, omo clothes washing soap, school file, scrubbing brush, medical fees, sugar, washing soap - 5 bars, hair shaving fee, Vaseline, shoe polish, toothbrush and toothpaste, bathing sponge, bathing soap, juice, and dry eats. Plus, we buy uniforms first term and shoes second term!

We try to keep kids at home to go to local schools, but many times it isn't possible. It isn't safe for them to walk the long distance to school.

We appreciate you!  13 college graduates now - and more to come!
